Did you see it? Did you see it? My hair is afro straight. Yaaasss! I've been natural for 3 years now and this is my first time doing this style. My hair is "so straight" that when I look at my selfies I feel like I got a relaxer...but oh no hunty...this is proof that we DO NOT need chemicals in our hair to wear a straight style. My hair was able to get this straight thanks to EVA NYC, a hair care brand based out of New York. EVA NYC is known for their stylish designs, advanced technology and ingredients. I first learned of the brand when my fiancé, Beck found me their Galaxy Dryer. I'm sure he loved the design, which I do as well...but again their advanced technology really sold me. That is important when you are trying to find the right heat styling tool to eliminate any damage to your strands. I used all EVA NYC products for this style...and I must say they were pretty impressive.
First of all, you must determine if heat styling is right for you. If you have damaged hair of course you should nurse your hair back to health before doing a style like this. A lot of heat is involved, and although EVA NYC products help eliminate damage you should still consider your hair's condition first. If you hair is healthy it is still important to prep your hair. I did a full on wash day before doing my blow out and style. That also included a pre-poo to prep my hair before using shampoo. The shampoo is not sulfate free so this step was definitely important to me. I also did a deep conditioning treatment/hair mask. The argan oil and mask are my favorite products of the EVA NYC collection. The mask did not have much slip however it is super thick, coated my strands perfectly and made my hair feel stronger. The main reason I loved the argan oil treatment is it can also be used as a heat protectant. Those are the top products and treatments you need before using heat: PRE-POO, DEEP CONDITION, and use a HEAT PROTECTANT. You can learn more about the EVA NYC collection in the below tutorial/demo. The products used are:
Clean It Up Shampoo ($8.99)
Soften Up Conditioner ($8.99)
Therapy Session Hair Mask ($14.99)
Hungry Hair Oil Treatment ($15.00)
Freshen Up Dry Shampoo ($11.99)
Forget Me Knot Dry Conditioner ($11.99)
Almighty Pro-Lite Dryer Galaxy ($70.00)
In the tutorial/demo I went over a lot of points. I hope you learned a lot about the heat styling process and EVA NYC products. I'm sure you have some questions so I've taken a few questions from my social media to outline here. If you do not see your question answered, leave a comment on this post.
1 WHAT IS YOUR HAIR TYPE?
I have low porosity hair and its a mixture of 4ABC.
2 WHERE IS YOUR JACKET FROM?
LMBO! This jacket is from Jennifer Lopez's collection at Kohl's.
3 WHAT HAIR COLOR DO YOU HAVE?
I have Crème of Nature color from their Argan Oil collection. Both bronze copper and intensive red.
4 CAN YOU GO INTO THE DIFFERENT SPECS ON HEAT SETTINGS?
The flat iron has a heat setting of 140 degrees to 450 degrees. I used 450 and then turned it down to 375. It all depends on how thick or fine your hair is. I wanted to be safe and use a lower heat setting. If I kept it at 450 I'm sure my hair would have been bone straight. But I was being cautious.
5 HOW OFTEN SHOULD I FLAT IRON MY HAIR?
Heat styling can lead to damage so I recommend as little as possible. I will maintain this look by doing a doobie wrap at night. I will not add anymore heat to my hair for awhile. Some recommend heat styling with a flat iron once a year. Its up to you, just be careful of damage.
6 HOW MANY PASSES WITH THE FLAT IRON?
I think its best to do only one pass and then bump the ends. If once pass does work I suggest turning up the heat just a bit.
7 WHAT HEAT PROTECTANT DO YOU USE?
I used EVA NYC's argan oil treatment but I also use Carol's Daughter Macadamia Heat Protectant as well. Both can be found at Ulta.
8 HOW DO YOU LAYER THE PRODUCTS BEFORE STRAIGHTENING?
I only use a leave in conditioner and heat protectant; then use a blow dryer. I don't use any products or oil before using the flat iron. If you add any other product to your hair it will revert your strands. or cause damage.
9 WHAT ABOUT THE ENDS OF MY HAIR?
If you have raggedy ends you can use a fine tooth comb to help get those harder areas to straighten. If you can observe damage you should trim your ends.
10 HOW DO I PREVENT FRIZZ? THIS STYLE NEVER LASTS.
Unfortunately, frizz comes with the territory when you are wearing your natural hair. The heat protectant should combat some frizz. Your bedtime routine is also important. At night you can wrap your hair, add a small amount of styling foam to the outside layer to really smooth the hair around your head, use a soft bristle brush to make sure of it, use a real satin scarf to secure the wrap firmly. The next day you can use your heat protectant again for a fresh layer of protection, and pray for the best! If the frizz is unbearable pull the hair into a bun. The hair rubbing on your clothing may to the issue. In this video I noticed immediately that my hair laying on my jacket started to frizz. So play with other styles to keep your hair away from rubbing on things.
11 IT LOOKS LIKE THE FLAT IRON DOESN'T GLIDE SMOOTHLY. PLEASE EXPLAIN.
The flat iron is pure perfection. It has floating 100% ceramic salon quality plates. It glides very smooth and there is absolute NO SNAGGING. If the video shows other wise is it definitely the operator...ME! I am doing a chase method that is used to really tame afro kinky hair during the straightening process. Its as if I have crab claws for hands. Its a technique you have master especially using your non dominant hand.
12 YOUR HAIR DOES NOT LOOK FLAT IRONED, IT LOOKS LIKE A BLOW OUT.
If you are not familiar with afro textured hair I can see why you would think that. Afro textured hair is either very curly or kinky. I have a mixture of both. I usually wear my hair in its natural state. Women of color usually use CHEMICALS or other EXTREME MEASURES to straighten afro textured hair. This flat iron gave me afro straight hair that I absolutely love! If I kept it at 450 degrees I'm sure my hair would have been more straight. But i played it safe. I am very impressed with the results.
